The stories of Hans Christian Andersen sounded beautiful and tragic and very Catholic read by Father Ib in his thick Danish accent. Unlike the Disney version, the mermaid wanted to be human first and foremost because people had souls and a shot at everlasting life in heaven. When mermaids died they turned to sea foam, aka wave scum. The little mermaid asked a sea witch for help. All she had to do was get a human prince to fall in love and marry her. You could say the mermaid was a soul-digger.
Of course the prince fell in love and, it was implied, messed around with the enchanted mermaid but the Royal Pain would never jeopardize the throne for a little tail. He wed another royal.
The little mermaid was shocked to her albacore.
