Hanksite forms in evaporative lakes where highly mineralized water just sits and bakes in the 100+ degree heat of the summer. The first crystals to form are halite (salt) and then rarer minerals like borax and hanksite. Even rarer are the octahedral sulfahalites. These were all found in the Searles Lakes near Trona California, one of the very few localities for Hanksite.
