This is one of my favorite lightning shots. There is an exit to basically nowhere along I-76 outside of Wiggins Colorado that has a nice vantage point. Many times when coming home from chasing in NE Colorado I stop here and get some nice lightning shots as the after dark light show is at its peak!
We just had come from the front part of the storm and the lightning was scary. It lit a field fire in front of us and we spent some time informing the authorities and warning the two houses adjoining the burning wheat field.
These bolts were close, and it was raining, so there was no point in getting outside of the car and using a tripod, simply too risky to life and possessions. Instead of tripod, I used another technique by holding the camera and using a remote for open exposure shots. This is possible because it is very dark outside, and the wipers keep most of the water off of the windshield so when there is light it comes through quick and clean!
I'm really blown away that this bolt came so close to the ground yet it did not strike. It was a beautiful close shot of some amazing lightning! Got many other amazing shots from this location on this night too, including another personal favorite below!
