Spring is finally here! Not long until storm chasing season begins here in Colorado; should be one or two early storms in the next month! Many storms here in Colorado are initiated due to orographic lifting by the elevated Palmer Divide, which extends east onto the plains from the mountains in Central Colorado. I live on the western Palmer Divide and get to see many storms flow overhead!
This lightning was taking from my porch, facing west as a storm was approaching. It struck on the adjacent property and took out the power to the neighborhood for a small time. Its neat seeing all the stepped leaders and the single one that came in contact with ground, all in the blink of an eye!
Noting the obvious, taking lightning pictures on ones porch is very dangerous. I have figured out a way to safely take these pictures but it requires some planning. I use a tripod, open exposure and a wired release cable to keep things on auto-pilot. I set up the camera/tripod well before the storm approaches. Sometimes I don't guess right and miss the action; but sometimes I'm spot on!
