I hope that Jupiter Ascending does better in other countries. I don't want to see it fail. Because let's face it, if it does, this is the last "blank-check" sort of movie that The Wachowskis will ever see. And that's too bad. Yes, most of the movies associated with the Wachowskis have failed at what they set out to do, but you have to admit, they were something to behold. Sometimes, TOO MUCH of something.
I mean, look at Speed Racer. That movie was, is, visually unparalleled. It was way, WAY too much, and there was far too little structure to the movie, but there is not a movie of its kind anywhere else. It is a vision of the highest order. That's great, especially in today's risk-averse Hollywood.
I think that the Wachowskis are like George Lucas. Lucas had great vision, and that's a valuable thing, but he needs someone to give it structure and discipline. It's amazing how often that's the case in the film industry. I often think of the binary entity that was Michael Eisner and Frank Wells. It was well known that Eisner would go crazy, and then Wells would quietly work behind the scenes to keep everything from falling off the rails.
