@blueandbluer 's post about the struggle between descriptivism and prescriptivism brought me to this realization about language, particularly when educating student who wish to work in Communication Sciences and Disorders. I have landed at the following rationalization: We, as a profession, must be as clear as possible. To be clear, we should adhere to commonly known and accepted rules of language so that our thoughts may be understood by our conversational partner without difficulty. When speaking, we are often conversing with individuals with disorders, and so should strive for clarity. When writing, we converse with an unknown reader of unknown background, and so clarity must, again, be paramount.
