Self Portrait (I’ve never seen The Sound of Music), 2018, oil on canvas, 240cm x 170cm.
Reflecting on my painting critique today and it’s kinda crazy thinking about how I got into painting. I look back and it all kinda starts a few years ago with a good ceramics teacher (@clayprecinct). I pretty much joined a weekend ceramics class because I wanted to start exploring my creative side. My intention was to make a bowl I could eat from, but this soon escalated as I became addicted to the wheel and would spend most of my time experimenting and creating new work. Last year I decided to go back to uni with the intention of majoring in sculpture. But this changed when I took my first painting class. I discovered abstracts for the first time and I soon replaced my clay addiction with paint. It’s just funny how people can change the course of your life.
I also think this self portrait is pretty true to me. I sometimes feel like I’m all over the shop not knowing what the fuck I’m doing. I also decided to start naming my work random shit I say and/or my confessions. Hence why this one is called “I’ve never seen The Sound of Music.”
