Alice tucked her daughter in and kissed her goodnight. She went to double check the lock on the door and went into her study. Alice began to write.
The Pokey Little Puppy
It is like the stray puppy that walks up. You can't be too forward, it will startle and run away. You can tell the dog is hungry, thirsty, and in need of some tender loving care. This dog is on its last leg and you can tell the journey traveled has weathered its poor soul by looking in his eyes.
What is this? A strange place, two humans, they've spotted me. It is unfamiliar voices, I creep closer, sniffing the ground around me, marking my territory from time to time to create me a safe haven. I don't see any kids to pull on my tail or ride me like a horse. So, I do what any dog would do, I wag my tail and grin.
Creeping in closer, aware there may still be threatening conditions, I wonder if they have a treat or a drink of water to help me on my way. Is that a hot dog dropped from the grill last night, I sniff.
What? Oh No! Mam, stay back, easy now, I growl out.
She stopped. Humm.. Has she done this before? Met a stray lost puppy, I wondered.
She gently reaches into her pocket and pulls out a treat, knowing I am famished.
I drop my stick, tail tucked, head down, and eyes up to hers, I ease in and gently take the treat as she caresses my fears with the gentle stroke of her hand. Her husband, standing there helplessly, doesn't know how she does it.
And what the dog doesn't know and I do, her husband mutters to himself in awe, is that this puppy will soon be flea-bathed, groomed, fed, and tucked in a warm cozy bed. Breakfast will be ready when he wakes in the morning. Just simply loved and taken care of until God says a new home is prepared for the stray.
But, see what the puppy, man, or woman neither know is that this puppy had to go on this journey. Sometimes the road is long and hard, other times they are short and sweet. But, they all lead us to our destiny and shape us for the next turn ahead.
For now, the puppy knows he doesn't have to live on scraps every day.
Alice stretched back in her chair as she yawned and decided she knew who would be wanting breakfast also at sunrise, Aoife. She turned her light off and went and curled in bed beside Aoife for the night. Dreaming of this new guy in her life, with her arms around Aoife as she nodded off.
