I am a 30 year old contemporary artist and designer who was born in Sri Lanka, grew up in Africa, New Zealand and now living in Australia.
Coming from a unique background I have seen how the diverse, unfamiliar and unseen get treated differently throughout various parts of the world. Through my paintings I explore the physical and emotional reactions of the human mind.
I create my paintings with oil paint by applying layer upon layer to create texture. I strip back the subjects’ skin colour and their facial features because my focus is on the distortion of emotion. I believe we all diverse so I want to focus on what is underneath, what is hidden, the distortion that others don’t see or are afraid of. I want to bring unity and understanding to everyone regarding diversity, no matter where you are from or who you are.
I have recently been part of a campaign In Queensland, Australia to promote mental health through art and my work was displayed on digital billboards throughout Brisbane and the Gold Coast. This art was then auctioned off with the proceeds going to Mental Health charities.
With your assistance this grant will help me to continue to speak out for those who need a voice. I will be focusing on workshops and exhibitions to unite and promote the diverse as well as encourage donations with the proceeds going towards mental health charities.
