My name is Alex Kalomeris and I’m an artist working in Los Angeles. I recently heard about this Science Friday artist opportunity and felt compelled to apply. I am submitting to you because my art has always had a strong connection to the natural world. From the natural themes common in my images to the long lasting relationship with my science-education client Mystery Science, I am always trying to make work that not only showcases the beauty of the natural world, but helps educate future generations.
For the past year and a half, I have collaborated with the SF-based education company Mystery Science to produce an array of images, maps, and presentations that present scientific ideas in the fields chemistry, biology, and astrology to a k-8 audience. These images are integrated into classroom activities and lessons and taught in classrooms all over the US. By creating diverse, playful images I hope to inspire kids to pursue or at least question their relationship to Earth.
When not working with Mystery Science, I like to branch out and create illustrations that reflect my identity as a Californian, and how the natural scenery influenced me as both an artist and environmentally-conscious adult. Whether I am creating illustrations for clients or just for fun, I am always thinking of how they can help tell a story.
Thank you for taking the time to learn a bit about me. I have placed a few images below that reflect what I shared above. Hope you enjoy.
