"DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES AS A TOOL" RESPONSE:
This chapter is a thorough review of the movement of artistic media into the digital sector. In the past ten years almost all forms of artistic media has been affected by digital medium in some aspect. Sometimes the art, whether photography, painting, drawing, or sculpture, will be created using digital technologies and it will be obvious in the finished product. Whereas in other cases, the use of digital manipulation is so obscure that it goes unnoticed. Either way, this chapter discusses the characteristics of the digital medium as allowing “...multiple manipulation and a seamless combination of art forms...” Digital technologies adds multiple possibilities to historic art techniques such as collaging and appropriation. The digital platform allows for immediate accessibility to of visual work via the internet. This chapter uses some key examples of the use of digital technologies for the creation of artwork.
I found this chapter to be invaluable. I found each of the examples discussed such as visual images, in photography and print, that are morphed using mathematical functions, and the use of digital technologies to “seamlessly blend” and add “extra dimension” to composites and collage especially interesting. This discussion led to the use of digital technologies to turn images into concepts and“brand” them to use in advertising. Digital technology also encompasses the use of “rapid prototyping” which automates a CAD (computer-aided design) model to either a physical object or a sculpture that exists only virtually as a CAD model or a digital animation. I found the discussion about this type of technology especially interesting as I’m majoring in Digital Arts and Sciences, and this is the area where i’m focusing. The chapter has inspired me.
