Graphite and gouache on watercolor paper
This piece is an interpretation of 'Child with Death Mask' 1938 by Frida Kahlo, who made a sister piece with similar subject matter which has not yet been located. 'Marigold' brings both pieces together - the skulls, the tiger mask, the mountains, and the flower in the child's hand (the title). All the elements encompass a young Frida - who in her original pieces seems to be contemplating the difficult life she did not know she would lead - among the mountains, so much bigger than her plight. It's name is celebration of her life - marigolds typically being a flower offered to the dead at their graves, and a way to say thank you for all the lessons she’s taught me.
