Walking into the portal, Quinn felt the familiar warm energy surge around him, yet something felt different this time. The glowing exit on the horizon seemed the same distance away but strangely the journey was taking far longer than usual. Somewhat perturbed, Quinn picked up the pace and started to run - but the farther he ran, the farther the exit became. It felt like the portal had somehow short-circuited.
Making no progress, Quinn started to sprint as fast as he could and as he did so, the energy in the portal started to fizzle and pulsate. Using every last muscle in his body, he ran faster and faster down the portal, sending a million shards of kaleidoscopic energy flying through the air like a Catherine Wheel. Pulse racing, Quinn could see the exit was getting nearer but the muscles in his legs were starting to burn and he knew they wouldn’t hold out for long – he wasn’t going to make it.
Suddenly, as though the portal had somehow reset itself, the exit came hurtling towards Quinn at a great speed. With no time to react, he crashed headfirst into it, tumbling violently onto the other side.
Catching his breath, Quinn lay on the cold ground for a second. Slowly opening his eyes, he assessed his new surroundings.
“Oh. I see.” he thought.
