Music is my memory.
I usually have one song at any given time that I'm listening to on repeat. I listen to it for about three days, and then I move to the next song. When I hear an old song, I see a memory. I even do this when I read, which is why certain songs remind me of books.
I've been listening to Guster (@guster) since high school, and their songs hold some particularly poignant memories for me, mostly related to my family.
"Amsterdam" reminds me of riding in my brother's ancient poop-colored Audi in high school. He was a senior when I was a freshman. At the end of the school day, he'd pick me up to take us down to the soccer fields for practice.
"Careful" was one of two songs on my go-to-sleep playlist. The other was the opening song from the movie "The Pursuit of Happyness".
"Center of Attention" was (and still is) the go-to sing-a-long bonding song for me and my mom.
"Backyard" I've liked for so many years that there's no one memory.
"All the Way Up to Heaven" & "Happier" remind me of winter break in college. My family's a bunch of gym rats, so it reminds me of waiting for my mom to finish showering so we could go home.
All that's to say that Guster's pretty awesome. You can win a trip to see them in LA in February on Ello. Details here. Good luck.
