Stone Fox is one of two books that ever made me cry.
Spoiler alert: I’m going to tell you the end.
A boy named Little Willy enters a sled dog race with his dog, Searchlight, in order to release his sick grandfather from a $500 debt. They’re up against professional sledders with full teams — not good odds.
When the race comes, Little Willy and Searchlight due to their light weight and quick turns. But mostly it’s Searchlight, working relentlessly to win. So hard, that 100 feet from the finish line, her heart bursts.
All of the other racers stop and let Little Willy carry Searchlight across the finish line.
It’s heartbreaking and beautiful. I would have definitely recommended it to you, but you just read the ending.
Really touching memory, thank you @kseniaanske for prompting me to remember it. Image by Thomas Sierak.
