I started taking this improv class, and one of the core principles I’ve learned is to always say “YES, and” to grow a scene rather than tear it down.
Improv has put into words how I’ve been growing the past few years.
I’ve gone from saying:
No, because I’ll look stupid.
No, because I’ve never done that before.
No, because I don’t know what will happen.
YES let’s try the crocodile pizza, and let’s add some emu.
YES let's catch frogs, and let's name this one Timmy.
YES let's go rock climbing, and I'll try the freaky auto-belay.
As I’m writing this, I realize all of the things that I still say no to. Man, saying no isn’t nearly as fun. There’s still a lot of work to be done.
My point is, in improv, the scene is a million times better if you “YES! and” as often as possible. You get these crazy scenes full of energy where everyone’s feeling validated and pumped up.
And basically I’m out to make my life a giant improv skit. Thank you everyone for adding so much to the scene.
What're you up to today? What do you want to do?
Oh, and happy friday! Yes please!
