Snapshot (for AJ, Keleb, Michael, Timmy, Mitchell, Heather & CeCe)
Stepped outside a minute
To acknowledge The Moon
Offer up prayer for loved ones
Sip a toast to health and life
Full Moon in the midst of Mercury Retrograde, waxing Eclipse
The energy was crazy
Just outside my door hood rats posture with menace.
"I want you to step out! I want you to step out, Muthafucka!" head rat shouts, leaning into the driver's window of a beat-up Caprice.
I stepped out, and walked soundly past the commotion,
Friends looked right through me.
Glad to know I've still got it.
Invisibility has it's place.
Those who do see me and recognize
ask me where I've been.
"Mourning", I answer with a smile.
Drunken ruffians push their way into the bar.
Disrupting pool games
Causing a stir
I tense up.
Bar staff does, too.
We're all on guard.
Clarence walks past me
Doris at his side
"Don't start that shit, bitch! I don't need that tonight!"
Doris cowers silently.
Clarence towers over her, staring her into the ground
"I don't need the drama!"
"Neither do I." I think to myself, realizing it's time I head back home.
Fire trucks slowly rumble past me
White lights ablaze.
Three different Engines circle my block,
flashing me back to 1997
I shake it off and turn down my alley.
The hood rats have moved up a building
still posturing menacingly.
I stop at my stoop to photograph these shoes. Beige pumps.
(Street shopping is good in this neighborhood.)
A beige Caprice speeds up the alley
I take a snapshot
And stepped back inside.
