I am a Phoenix, Arizona based artist. I do portrait commissions, but my thrill is in the original pieces I get to create from my own inspiration. My goal with those is to connect with viewers, inspiring their curiosity with bold colors, unusual juxtpositions and even humor, and then get them thinking about what's really going on in the painting.
This piece is called "It's a Boy!". As a mom, I have seen the societal progress about gender identity reaching kids and helping many of them realize that they are far from alone as LBGT. It's a start, however we still have a long way to go. This painting creates a visual of the invisible gender shackles placed on children, attempting to influence them from the start with everything from the types of toys they're given to the clothes in which they're dressed. I hope it will resonate with people to communicate the absurdity and even the cruelty of imposing their own ideas of what another person's gender identity "should" be, rather than simply accepting and embracing what it is to the person experiencing it firsthand in themselves. In relation to patriarchy, is speaks loudly. We need to eradicate gender shackles altogether, removing the idea that there are two "tiered" genders. Let each individual simply be, and become who they naturally blossom into.
