This drawing was created with a brush and grey acrylic paint. Working from life, I had to draw quite quickly and so put down some quick gestural lines to capture the pose and compose the picture. Then, using the paint left on the brush, I gently feathered the bristles over the paper to lightly shade specific regions and create a sense of three dimensions. Finally, darker regions were added here and there e.g. hair and cast shadows. Simplification of form was key here, particularly when depicting the hands. Although this drawing is one of my favorites, the most amazing thing about it is that the model was 60 years old at the time!
'Preparing' - a female ballet dancer in a leotard sits on a foam mat with one leg straight and one bent at the knee. Maintaining a straight back she leans forward from the hips to stretch in preparation for her next set of moves. This lively sketchy dry brush painting captures a quiet moment of peaceful concentration and would sit happily on the wall of a domestic living room or in the studio of a professional dancer
