What is your art about?
At the moment I am playing on themes of collective consciousness, inspiration, and artistic madness. I am using the image of the cicada to symbolize messengers or inspiration to tap into collective consciousness. And various other motifs.
What inspires you to create?
I am a tinkerer, I have lots of ideas, and I feel driven to get them out of my mind for my own sanity. Also I quite enjoy the creative process of making things.
How have you arrived at your technique?
The art I am making at the moment happened organically. I started using books to paint on, around 2012, and it's developed into using books as almost a collage element. Currently I am making assemblage type paintings with books. I paint on paper and then cut the paintings out and play with placement and shapes. I then mount the paper on foam core and use books as a supporting element.
I also still paint on discarded books.
What are you most proud of achieving as an artist?
Well I just made a big change in my life, I was working a steady full time job teaching. However I am now working side jobs so that I can make painting my focus. Its a financial risk and I hope to support myself through art making. Although I still work quite a bit, I have given up certainty for a little bit of artistic freedom. I am quite proud that I’ve gone out on a limb to pursue my passion.
I will be wrapping up my current body of work soon and it will be shown at IAO Gallery in Oklahoma City, opening October 20th. Then after that I will be showing at DNA Galleries, also in OKC, in November. So two bodies of work shown pretty much at the same time. I am painting away quite happily.
Whats a fun fact about you the public wouldnt know?
I am a kombucha addict.
