Smooth Sailing On The Tide; Thames Hauler
Lambeth Bridge, London, England, UK; 30 March 2018
More than just a pretty place, the Thames sees brisk duty as a thoroughfare for people and goods seeking to bypass the narrow and crowded surface streets of the city itself.
Watching this tug pull these containers upstream with the flow of the tide, one can imagine the same cargo being transported through town on lorries one or two containers at a time, and it's a big guess how long that would take. One moving van takes fifty-eight minutes to travel the four miles from Harlesden to Kennington in clear traffic.
A short while later, maybe two hours, the same boat passes by humming downstream on the visibly ebbing tide. On the barge in tow sits a different load of containers, possibly refuse or demolition debris on its way to processing. Its engine would be burning no less fuel than it had been as it seemingly idled on the motion of the water on its way up with goods earlier in the day.
One feels the efficiency and logic of working with the current.
