Always alert for solar activity, I was eager to improve upon my last aurora catching attempt when I heard that the kp index over North America was going to be 7 or higher Monday night... Having scouted out some new locations on recent camping trips, I packed up the car and headed out to the west side of Whidbey Island, WA. I arrived before sunset, set up camp and watched the sky change from day to night to dancing lights, and for the first time in my life viewed the Northern Lights with my naked eyes. 3 winter trips to Iceland were never this fruitful.
