"Why I hope we'll get a mass migration to Ello (assuming the platform improves).
It seems like new social media companies will go through three phases: (1) Start out offering a lot for free in order to gain users; (2) Then introduce some relatively benign income-producing elements to satisfy investors you're on the right track; (3) Once you've built up A LOT of users who are fully invested in the service, start monetizing the hell out of them (including getting money from them just for the right to interact with each other the way they originally intended) so you can get the HUGE bucks.
Twitter seems to be on the cusp of (3), threatening to "curate" our feeds, i.e., extort money from us to give us unfettered access to each other, as Facebook does, with "boosted" posts.
So why not shift to some new company and enjoy the (1) and (2) phases? Maybe this company will be satisfied at (2) and never go to (3). But if they do, maybe a new company will spring up, and we'll migrate again..."
