A First Time Viewer's Summation of Doctor Who.
I have only watched this latest season of Doctor Who, and I have only just started watching it because I love Peter Capaldi as an actor. My only other exposure to Doctor Who has been so many gifsets on tumblr, I had to block them, as the sheer volume was making me angry. I also have seen Doctor Who cosplayers.
Possible spoilers ahead.
Doctor Who is about a magical space hobo from Gallifrey who is very lonely and for whatever reason only hangs out with humans. In this universe, there are humans, Gallifreyans, Lizard People, Cybermen and other killer robots, Daleks, humanoids, Monsters Under Your Bed, Weeping Angels, Dinosaurs, shape shifters, menacing Victorians and Ollie Reeder.
I can't quite tell what the show is supposed to be about. Does the Doctor have a goal? It seems like he is just kind of hobo-ing about, albeit dapperly dressed with his 'Companion,' Clara, who used to have a crush on the Doctor, but not with this face, and the Doctor knows it and apparently kind of approves of it but is sorry if he led her on? Clara is dating Pink, who is a soldier and in the UK it's apparently fine to be all, hey, you're a soldier, how many people have you killed? Tons, I bet, and if the ex-solider shows distress over this, you should just keep it up because, hey, murderer, I'm just nervous, get over it!
I was really surprised when some of the characters roll up on Gallifrey and they wind up in a barn. I thought it'd be more sci-fi, less rustic. I supposed the Gallifreyans made the TARDIS and the Sonic Screwdriver but which are pretty advanced pieces of tech but that little kid was sleeping in a full on barn with hay in it and shit. WTF.
Do I enjoy the show? It's not quite what I was expecting. It's a light hearted kind of monster of the week show. I like Peter Capaldi. He is a great actor. Clara obviously wants adventure, which is cool, so maybe that's just the goal, hey, I'm going to hobo about and you want to break up the banality of your human life, lets go in my magic phone booth and almost die a few times. Is the Doctor a good man? From the Bank Heist episode, I'd say yeah. But being a good person in a universe where there is a lot of bad shit probably has him more cautiously good than anything else, knowing that playing neutral is the best way to go.
The latest interaction between Pink and the Doctor, where Pink hears Doctor Capaldi is a Time LORD and starts in on that was probably one of the better interactions in the show. I think Pink knows as well as the Doctor, being good in a universe where there's a lot of bad has you skating on neutral and the consequences of that can be devastating.
I'll finish out the Capaldi Doctor and be done, unless they get another actor I love on for the next Time Lord. It seems to want to take on big themes and big questions but doesn't seem super interested in answering them perhaps, or at least not now. shrug
