My wife has been covering Human Rights in homeschool this week. I was told to reaffirm this topic where possible while she's at work and I'm doing school stuff with the kid. So we watched "Short Circuit". I told her that it was part of her schooling, but didn't elaborate.
After the credits, I explained that NOVA and Johnny 5 are analogous to those in power in any given society and those people that are oppressed because they are different or hold different beliefs. When we chatted, it seemed like it really helped click with her how people can look down on others as less-than-human in very tangible way.
Also took the opportunity to have her consider more philosophical questions, like what the implication of thinking machines with free-will would be, and that if a machine can think and feel, what exactly the importance of being human or "alive" in the traditional sense is. A fun time all around. #GeekLearning
