Something I'd love to see is the ability to define a handful of categories that you can then optionally assign to your posts (so for me I might make "music" and "code" categories; for @brianhalligan maybe "politics" and "music"). By default your friends would see all posts, but they would have the option of moving one of your categories to Noise.
It might just sound like a variation on Circles/friend groups, but I think it's pretty different. Those concepts try to address privacy; this doesn't. They're a hassle because they require a lot of dull management that you don't want to think about. A category system:
- Would be easy because you only have to think about the topic (or not bother).
- Would move the power to the viewer (why should I decide which friends care to see what? That's really their business).
- Would mean you wouldn't have to worry about inundating people's feeds with stuff they don't care about. Slap a category on it and you would then have politely provided them with a way to shut you up about X without hiding you. It would make everyone a little happier.
