How the Ello x Threadless store came to be —
A few months ago we were driving back to our hotel in Burlington, VT with @budnitz. We were talking about printing some Ello logo t-shirts, mostly for the team and thought maybe we could sell some too.
We quickly realized that we had an opportunity to do a lot more than just print some t-shirts. We could use the t-shirts as a way to support and engage the Ello community. It was about 11pm EST, but we called @skaw (Jake, the founder of @threadless) at home from Paul’s car. Jake was out, but called back about 10 minutes later. We gave him the rundown on what we were thinking. He loved the idea and was in immediately.
A few weeks prior, @nopattern (Chuck Anderson) had reached out asking if there was anything he could do to get involved with Ello. Being long time fans of Chuck’s work, we were super excited, but nothing immediately came to mind and we left off saying, we’d be in touch soon. The morning after the phone call with Jake, we hit up Chuck and proposed that he come on board to curate the Ello x Threadless limited edition artist series t-shirt project.
A few phone calls and a handful of emails later and the plan was hatched. We’d release a new artist series t-shirt every 2 weeks. The shirt would be limited edition, but not by quantity, by duration. Chuck would work with the Ello community to find both established artists and work with up and comers. Staying true to Ello, we wanted to keep things simple. So each artist’s canvas is a 10” Ello logo. All we ask is that the artist bring their artwork (whatever they choose) to the interior of the Ello logo.
To kick things off, we asked Chuck to design the first shirt titled Color Cave. We wanted to set a tone for the project and demonstrate Threadless’s printing capabilities. In the case of Chuck’s shirt, we’re using diluted plastisol inks to achieve a super vibrant 6-color image while maintaining a lightweight, premium t-shirt feel.
We already have the second artist lined up, but it’s still a secret for now .
There’s some additional goodies in the works too…
We couldn’t be happier with the partnership. Chuck is so rad and Threadless is as cool as companies come. We hope everyone enjoys the t-shirts as much as we do. If you like what we’re doing with Ello, this is the first way for you to support us (and Threadless) - and the artists, makers and creators powering the Ello experience.
Be safe — and have fun out there
