A hypothesis on those interested in starting to write fiction: begin with short stories. They take less time to write, rewrite, and edit than a novel, which I think helps one complete and finish more stories. By finishing stories, one will find their voice and get more comfortable with the process.
As I have been editing my novel, I am grateful I took the time to write and edit shorter stories to become more familiar with the process. It's overwhelming to stare at 50k+ words and try to figure out what to do next, especially when that lovely friend Self Doubt walks in.
