Somehow in the mess of 2018, Holly Jo is able to take you back to a nostalgic era, with romance and vibrancy. Her self portraits shine with so much detail, and with each photo she explains a part of herself:
"As a kid I didn’t get out much. I stayed in to read. Most of the three* years of middle school I spent tucked away behind Young Teen novels. I gained many of my young perspectives and ideas about the world through fantasy and mystery books. Sometimes this was good- I had a more magical view of the world’s possibilities; and sometimes it was bad- I was unaware of the true atrocities that could be waiting. I wasn’t out there really exploring and experiencing reality. Books served as a perfectly safe way to be involved but also, to not be. You’ll notice books in my portraits often as they’re a little grounding reminder to myself, and photography is the most grounding thing I know how to do. Books remain an escape mechanism when I need them but I also am learning to use escapism less and to become more grounded and “in my body”. Anyone else learning about being more connected to themselves?"
