It's nice that Ello put ALL their money into whatever week-long media push it took to get me here. I saw nothing but "Ello is the next big thing" posts for those few days, and then NOTHING since. Not a single obvious change has happened here, nothing to indicate a desire by the developers to keep people around. The piddly "Feature List" is nice and transparent and all, but the site isn't growing--and I'm not talking about quantity of members.
Like a great music album, the first track has to say "Hey, this is what we're about, and this is cool, so keep listening." Track two has to say "Hey, remember how good that first track sounded? Here's something even better". Track three can take it down a notch with a "We don't want to completely overwhelm you yet, but more great stuff is coming". Then, around track seven, the album should scream "So, thanks for sticking with us, here's the best we got. ENJOY IT!" Then you ride out the rest of Side B with a smile, eager to flip it back to A when it's done.
Ello is like that Mazzy Star album. The first track, the only "hit" it has, is slow and strangely hypnotic--nothing too impressive, but kinda cool. Then EVERY SONG AFTER IT is more bland, boring shit that makes you realize they blew ALL their charm and appeal on that one crappy stoner track.
Thanks for reading.
