VOTE FOR WOMEN - Susan B. Anthony
When I started working on this image I knew I wanted to reference the suffragette movement. 100 years ago the suffragettes wore sashes that said “Votes for Women.” I have updated that statement for 2018 by removing the “S” from VOTES so it now states VOTE FOR WOMEN. It is important for people to be reminded of the past and to appreciate how far we’ve come. We should give thanks to the strong women like Susan B. Anthony who paved the way for women to be able to vote and to remember what they went though to get us here today. With 20% female representation in congress we have come a long way, but clearly, have a ways to go. Susan B. Anthony said “There never will be complete equality until women themselves help to make laws and elect lawmakers.” We make up half of the electorate. We should be fairly represented in our government. Its’ time for equality. As she said in a famous speech… “failure is impossible.”
Flowers are a repeated theme in my work because to me they are the greatest symbol of feminine beauty. In the suffragette movement the yellow rose was the symbol chosen by the Suffragists while the red rose was chosen by the Anti-Suffragists. What ensued was the “War of the Roses”.
