First Contact - Oil on panel, 12" x 24"
A more or less self-explanatory painting, featuring a selection of F&SF back issues. Those on the left date from my teen years, while those to the right date from 1980 into the early 2000s, the latter of which I mostly did not read. I always preferred Analog, Amazing, or Astounding to F&SF. In the 70s, I bought back issues from the 60s and 70s, which were readily available for pennies in the used books stores I haunted back then. Hard science fiction was what I liked most, fantasy not so much. I never could get through Lord of the Rings, although I quite enjoyed the (relatively) recent movie version of it. Moreover, the sword & sorcery thing really rubbed me the wrong way when it came along. None of that D&D stuff for me, either. Not that there's anything wrong with it, but I was (and remain) indifferent to it. Same goes for the whole universe of video gaming that grew out of all that, even though I stood in line to play Pong and fed a lot of quarters to Missile Command back in the day. I liked the Myst series, and Portal was fun, but I've never owned an Atari, PlayStation, Nintendo, X-Box, or any of those platforms, about which I couldn't care less. But I digress.
