NEW YEARS REVOLUTIONS
On New Years we often take a hard look at ourselves, and decide to do things differently. We resolve to find a better job, to eat better, to exercise more often.
The problem is, there are good reasons why New Years Resolutions rarely work out.
We decide to begin exercising an hour every day — but the next day its raining. Then we’re busy at work. The next week we’ve caught a cold. In the end we just give up completely.
A much easier strategy is to simply resolve to do things that we already know we can do.
If we resolve to ride a bicycle for just a few minutes every week, that’s something manageable — and we succeed. That feels great. Magically, a few minutes every week transform themselves into an hour every day. Soon enough we find ourselves arriving back home, tired and happy, from a full-day ride.
This is how a small resolution becomes a lifetime revolution.
