We’ve had a number of people ask us about the black bicycle we featured in front of our recent New York City pop-up gallery.
This is none other than our Scorcher – an adrenaline-infused Edition of our flagship Model No.1, inspired by a group of speed-loving rebels from the archives of bicycle history.
In the late 19th century, city streets were becoming increasingly congested as bicycles threatened to replace horses as the pre-eminent mode of transportation in the American west.
In the midst of the crowds, a group of young riders sought to prove their courage and strength by pedalling as quickly and recklessly as possible – with little regard for terrified pedestrians and horses in their wake. They were fast, brash and fearless. They were Scorchers.
Their namesake Budnitz Bicycle keeps the misfit spirit alive. Knobby Racing Ralph tires turn our speed demon No.1 into an all-terrain terror. An inverted titanium riser bar permits an aggressive and aerodynamic position - and lowers your radar profile as you buzz unwitting pedestrians at dusk.
Multiple attempts to bring the original Scorchers to justice failed, as specially assigned bicycle deputies secretly joined the ranks of the very scoundrels they were sent to apprehend.
More than a century has passed and horses in the streets are now few and far between. But some things never change.
When a human being is presented with a fast machine and a stretch of flat, smooth pavement – speed always wins.
