I've come up with a working theory as to why online dating at my age is such a miserable experience:
- We've all been single for a long time.
- In that long time, our expectations for a partner have only risen.
- Only weirdos are left.
1 & 2 are incompatible with 3.
Obviously, rates of success would improve with lowered expectations, and with it, acceptance. But that goes straight back to 1 and 2 -- after being single for a long time, why should one reduce their expectations? Reducing expectations also runs counter to 3's continued existence.
After a long time of the self-indulgences (for lack of a better phrase) of being single, we've all gotten a little weird and spoiled. It takes something pretty fucking special to knock us out of those patterns of self-indulgence. And that's just not out there anymore.
Something like that. Dunno. Thinking out loud.
