The place I work at -- you're either here for a very short time, or you're here forever.
I've been here for eight years, coming up on nine. I'm one of the younger long-termers.
Anyway, we have this one file which I'm in charge of, and have been for the last seven years, when an old lady retired. It was her file before that. She retired full-time, and somehow still comes in part-time, although I'm not sure why. She can barely walk, and as far as I can tell, the only thing she does is make ice cubes for the kitchenette fridge. Srsly. Like, for real.
Someone downstairs had a cheque to write for my file, my file of seven years, but still gave it to the lady who had it before me, the ice cube lady.
Forever the new kid.
I don't get it. We have some real hangers-on here. Assuming that they're not desperate for cash (which is possible, but I know of many who clearly aren't), why stick around? Go volunteer at the art gallery or something, if you need the structure of getting out of the house. Open up the workplace, and let young people move in. Someone has to pay for your old age pension, right?
Don't get it. Move on. You've had your time here. Start something new.
