So I'm debating a purchase. I quite like the Maple Leaf Tartan, which is the official tartan of Canada (though unofficial for many years). It's the colours of maple leaves throughout the season, which gives it a nice, principled aesthetic:
Lovely. So the options are to buy either this one from Red Canoe, in merino wool, for $50:
Or this one in lamb's wool from an actual Scottish/Irish store, for $35:
Idunno. Merino wool is better, of course, and sorta looks fresher with its clarity, but the lamb's wool one looks so cozy. And the fringe is better. And I like the label, which looks like the real deal sort of deal.
Decisions, decisions. And of course, Ontario's provincial tartan stinks. And Quebec's, too. I wonder if the Boy Scouts of Canada tartan is somehow available -- it's badass, and if I remember correctly, spells out C-A-N-A-D-A in Morse.
The Red Canoe one comes out to $67 with shipping and taxes. The Scottish one has tax, and $20 (!) shipping. So -- no thanks.
It's possible that I'll come across the Red Canoe one in my regular travels, but... Yeah. Shipping is a killer here. Twenty bucks!
