Minister Blaney denies knowing about Muslim lawyer's Liberal support
Didn't know about this, as I was away. I went to law school with him. We were friendly enough, but not particularly close. I found him to be a bit of an operator, and I tend to shy away from people like that. But I never had a problem with him, and would only have good things to say about him. Still do.
As for the issue itself, I'm working on digging the allegations themselves. But offhand, as a first impression, it all seems a little anachronistic. So the guy was against gay marriage in 1996? So were a lot of people. Most people, probably. And sincere Muslims certainly among them. And as for the group associations -- it looks as if it were legit back then, but went astray afterwards. This was, after all, pre-9/11. Attitudes were vastly different.
So yeah. I still have to do some digging, so I can come up with a more informed opinion. But as far as first impressions go, it looks to be political, for whatever reason. Why was he vetted and found acceptable before? What's really changed since then?
