Given these recent posts in the Guardian, I really need to see Spiral one day. The language bits are very informative.
Pute de merde de con! The linguistics of Spiral slang
However, I have to admit that I've never understood one English-English bit of slang, 'taking the piss'. I know what it means and how it is used, but I've never understood the relationship to its intended object. Go figure.
So, oddly enough, I understand this part better in French than I do in English:
"And Laetitia says to the woman from the homeless service Vous vous foutez de ma gueule! (“You’re taking the piss!”), carefully minding her Ps and Qs even while cursing."
'Déconner' is my new favourite verb.
But I do have some confusion with 'flics'. In French, it's slang for cops. But, my Dad used it as Dutch slang for something else entirely (and not very nice). So it's another post-Dad mystery: was it just something he did personally, or is it actual Dutch slang (which can be pretty localized, esp. around Rotterdam). Dunno. I suspect the former, given all those nights he watched French films on Radio-Canada, with no subtitles, and I never did really know just how strong or weak his French was.
Mysteries. Ils m'emmerde.
