So I was at a law conference the past couple of days. It was fun. Well, not fun -- it can be pretty dull, but there's always stuff to learn.
The main thing for me, though, is being out among other actual lawyers. A few people I knew from being on the other side of files, and it was good to put a name to the face. But overall? Lawyers are a pretty smart, clever bunch. I forget that, working in isolation as I do. But the jokes are funny and fast, and dammit, it's a lot of work to keep up.
I don't mean to flatter myself by saying that. It was perfectly clear that there are much smarter, wittier people out there than I am. Put them all in a room together, and it can make for a great atmosphere.
Surprising number of women. Probably the majority, actually, and younger. Something about my field attracts them -- I suspect that the number of in-house position lends itself better to family situations. I don't mean to be stereotypical, but high-level law and partnership models don't lend themselves to having children -- this is a Big Problem in our business, and one which we haven't been able to solve. If an area appears where families can be accommodated, of course women are going to gravitate towards that.
Speaking of young women -- a lot of Longchamp bags. A LOT. Definitely the in thing. We were supposed to pick one up for Sis last year at the chichi outlet mall, but even there, they were only reduced by 15%. And fuck that.
So yes. A good time. And the Royal York is pretty swanky, with lots of stuff to steal. They realized their client, what can I say? But no silverware, I swear.
