Yeah, won't be missed.
Sun News Network Shut Down Friday
And this nice quote: "Over the past few years, every possible effort was made to achieve sufficient market penetration to generate the profits needed to operate a national news channel. Unfortunately, those efforts did not bear fruit because of the numerous roadblocks to carriage that we encountered."
Well, no. Sun's viewership numbers were pathetically low. Eight thousand. Eight thousand viewers nationally. While they did not get into every household in Canada, they still got into 5.1 million homes. Eight thousand out of 5.1 million is not very good. That's not 'roadblocks', that's no appetite for your product.
And let's not forget the fact that it was cable subscriptions that kept it on the air, not advertising. For all of Sun's griping about government handouts, and the primacy of the marketplace to decide, they sure sucked at the social teat for a long, long time, well past the time when the marketplace would have shut them down.
"When that journalism disappears, mark my words: our democracy will be diminished, and possibly even in peril. I’m not exaggerating."
Well, no. Eight thousand viewers. Yes, we need different voices on the air, absolutely. But when only eight thousand people were listening to that voice, maybe it's not a peril to democracy. Fuck, I'm sure the Hindi or Portuguese news broadcasts on Channel 47 get a lot more than eight thousand viewers. The Swiss Chalet Rotisserie Channel got a lot more than eight thousand viewers (and rightfully so).
"...the [sale] deal failed because the two sides could not reach an agreement over severance packages for Sun executives."
And by holding out for more, now they have nothing. Womp womp.
Eight thousand viewers. Heckuva job, Sun executives!
