Dunno. I suspect there were a lot of things at play here, most of which had little to do with medicine itself, and a lot to do with distrust of (white) authorities of various kinds. And how to argue against that? The cold reality of Science doesn't stand a chance in that psychological environment.
Of course, everyone's medical treatment should be firmly in their own hands. But as with anything, just because you can do something, does not mean that it's a good idea. And bullshit 'cold lasers' and raw food diets in Florida do not make a good idea.
