So last night was Kool & the Gang. They were a stoopid amount of fun.
I wasn't a huge fan going in, but thought that they are a legendary band, it was cheap, the dates worked out, so why not?
Man -- that is one tight band. And versatile. They are a tight band in the way that only comes with doing it for fifty years. And as well as they played their instruments, they could play the crowd even better. Those old dudes -- they're entertainers.
I think there were three original band members left? Another three might have only been there for forty years, and not the whole fifty. A couple of kids, who fit in with the group very, very well, including the lead vocalists. Those kids had real talent of their own, were fully into it, and not treating it like karaoke night or anything.
I love the 70s stuff, but I was persuaded on their 80s cheese now too. That stuff is fucking slick.
They wrapped it up with Celebration (of course), and it only showed how great a band they are. They changed it enough, but not too much, so as not to play a cliche of a song, but make it new and fresh while still obviously Celebration. That's a fine line to walk, and did they ever do it well. Even I was up there doing my white man wedding dance. (And the balcony was noticeably shaking -- yikes.)
So yeah. Much fun. Celebrate good times.
