I had a tumble yesterday trying to work on my internet connection (a futile attempt as it turns out, tech support had me on the floor for an hour while it was due to a network outage). Anyway, I was distracted and stumbled over a giant old television next to the desk, leading to one of those cartwheeling chain reactions that ricocheted me off the corner of the bed's footboard, a chair, and a wash stand. I still hit the deck on my hands and knees eventually. I did the quick assessment routine, nah, nothing broken or bleeding, got up, and went about my business. Wow, did I wake up knowing all of it today. I've got bruises in the weirdest places, including my ribs on one side where I hit the bed, and my thumb, where the ring I've been wearing there smashed it.
Makes me think about shock, how it cushions and muffles everything at first, allowing your brain to catch up with what's going on before it lets through the sensations. It's like the matrix effect, really.
