Bodies are intricate, complex, beautiful, and grotesque. The more obscene or horrifying elements in my work were originally borne out of my discomfort with my own body, and the various ways in which it has and could betray me. I sought to externalize this horror and placing it in and around expressions of traditional feminine beauty. Traditional expressions of femininity have always left me feeling guilty and uncomfortable, particularly the expectation that women are meant to be kind, meek, or pleasing to look at. My work explores these feelings of discomfort and anxiety.
