Is Monday gettin’ all up in your mix and making you feel sad and blue? Don’t worry Francine - it’s #FunkMongerMonday ! Today’s funk comes all the way from #SanDiego in the form of the glorious ashthorp .
I was having myself a good old fashioned think about who to feature as this week’s Monger of Funk, when I realised something awesome. Ever since I accidentally discovered the Ghostshrimp episode a few weeks back, I’ve been listening to The Collective Podcast (that Ash hosts) non-stop on my drive to and from work. On particularly intense episodes I’ll wait in the car outside my house for an episode to finish, and my neighbours keep peering at my from behind their curtains. I keep tellin’ them I’m not a weirdo but that’s the sort of thing that weirdos say, and now I don’t think I’m gonna get any Christmas cards. Now, Ash is a renown designer, illustrator, artist, ostrich, pelican etc. but the closest contact I’ve had with his creativity is every day on my drive to work, and it has been amazing to listen to his stories, advice, opinions and thoughts while he talks shop with some huge names in the creative world. I’m working backwards through the huge catalogue of episodes and I’m around 15 down, and I can’t shout about the podcast enough - the overall theme of a work/life balance is so interesting to hear about, and it really gets under the skin of why we do what we do.
I won’t gabble on about about the huge volume of awesome work that Ash has under his belt - there are great articles out there that make a whole lot more sense than me. One thing I want to mention though is Lost Boy. I heard Ash talk a lot about Lost Boy in conversations with a few folk, and it looks like the sort of project that’s gonna kick you down the stairs and play bagpipes to your sister - in a good way of course! Man it looks awesome. It’s a series of illustrations at the minute, but from what I gather from the podcast it’s set to be a collected summary of all the things he loved from his childhood, chopped up and built with the hands of a real grown up adult person man. Whatever form it takes, it looks like it’s gonna be incredible! Anyway, enough from me, go and check out Ash’s work - he’s up to all kinds of funk. Wrap your ears around The Collective Podcast too - it made my legs turn into speedboats and my arms turn into spaghetti!
