The Fallout: His Eleventh
Kip wakes up to the sound of his cell phone. He chose the most annoying ring tone he could for the lieutenant cause missing his call has always been a regrettable experience. Looking at his clock all that comes to mind is the fact that a useless stakeout ended less than three hours ago. Rolling out of bed he grabs the phone and answers it.
"Yea yea what?"
"Get your ass up and get down to the Starlight Auditorium, we caught another one."
Kip sits straight up on his bed, he doesn't want to say it but that won't change the facts.
"Another one what lieutenant? Not like the last one?"
"Afraid so Kip, we need you down here on this one."
Tossing his phone back on the bed and leaning his head back on the pillow, he starts to relive the events from 4 months ago. Trying to explain the method in which their little girl died to grieving parents. How do you explain something like that let alone a motive. Still not one single lead on her death and too many broken promises to them.
Kip gets up and throws a shirt and yesterday's jeans. Strolling into the kitchen he reaches into the fridge and grabs an apple and nukes a cup of coffee. 2 minutes later the microwave is beeping, signaling that his coffee was ready and his day was underway at 5:31AM.
Pulling up to the auditorium he sees the usual police tape around a wide area in front of the building. As he approaches the door he ducks under the tape and walks in. The lieutenant approaches him and guides him back to the back of the building.
The sight nearly made Kip lose the apple he just finished eating in the car. Covering his mouth and nose Kip leans down to look at the body which had been cleanly severed in 20 places with sharp glass panes. He notices that not one single pane of glass was broken.
Looking up he sees 20 empty bags and right below them 20 perfect piles of sand.
"So lieutenant, the bags had sand. They lost the sand and the strings broke causing the glass to fall?"
"Well Kip I can honestly tell you in all the years I've been doing this I've never seen something so disgusting"
Kip knew this was the same guy. He knew that attention is what he wanted and as far as Kip was concerned he wasn't going to get it.
"Not a word to the press lieutenant, we can't let this get out otherwise this guy is going to escalate his efforts."
As much as the lieutenant disliked keeping this from the press, detective Kip had the final say as this has been his case for the last three and a half years.
Kip looks around the room very carefully, he sees a camera was set up and assumes that the whole thing was recorded.
"Okay let's get the tape back to the office and see what we can get from it. And do your best to forget what you saw here today ladies and gentlemen"
There was no way Kip would forget. These murders were starting to take a serious toll on him. Again no leads and very little evidence of the person responsible. How does he tell this girls parents what happened to her? How will they understand? To be honest Kip himself doesn't understand what drives this guy.
As he leaves he stops the lieutenant at the door.
"This guy lives for showtime lieutenant, he's just a shadow killer as far as I can tell. Never showing who he is on the video. Just sickening."
The lieutenant simply nods as Kip gets back in his car and drives away, the image of that poor girl fresh in his head. How long did she survive? How many panes of glass came down before she died?
