I am a TEXTILE ARTIST creating textile wall hangings in a range of themes using recycled materials sourced from car boot sales and charity shops. I have a range of prints created from detailed photographs of textiles in a range of colour and tone, manipulated using photoshop. I am untrained, having learned traditional techniques at school, developing a modern approach in exploring fabric manipulation. I endorse some works with original poetry, providing an emotional layering to works.
CANCER 2: MASTECTOMY was inspired by my own experience, a second edition to CANCER 1: LUMPECTOMY, part of THE WOMANHOOD COLLECTION exploring natural states of being. Layers of sheer and cotton fabrics were used in addition to plastics, including bubblewrap (which expressed the fat layers exposed in surgery, which I had filmed for visual referance). The padded depth was necessary in the excavated site of the removed breast, leaving a cavity which the viewer can explore, layers exposed with frayed edges, promoting a natural texture. The surface area, unfinished sheep's wool, was pulled and torn to express the emotional trauma of the experience. Original poetry, CARVE ME UP, is hand embroidered onto the surface, posing the ultimate question AM I SEXY NOW?
This is my favourite textile.
