With me and my team, there is almost always a good reason if I cannot feature a particular species in my work. Either the terrain is impenetrable or inaccessible (physically or politically) or the seasons are erratic and unpredictable, or some part of the host plant/larval ID/pupation/adult habits code has not been broken.
However, for Julodis - my very favorite genus of my very favorite beetle family, the problem is simply stinking rotten bad luck. For almost 20 years since my first South Africa trip, I have not caught a single specimen of this relatively common genus and have only had catchers in the right place during their season in December once in two decades. Every Christmas I hold out hope that this will be the year but to date it's been a big fat stocking full of coal every year but one.
Holding out hope I can make the Nice list this year. #ivebeensogood #bioart #christophermarley #pheromone
