The Even Gentle
A new collaborative branching nanofiction
Ayo Nitzan shook the blood off. More blood came, splattering the white cabinet and countertop. Panic wasn't far behind, like a drum beating in the ears and a cool fire under the skin.
Ayo raced to the sink, scrubbed. No one would ever believe that story. Truth is only as compelling as it is sensible.
Fight, freeze, or flee: a choice that seems simple on the surface, but the surface is a pitted and dismal thing when examined too closely. Survival is rarely as simple as that.
But Ayo’s feet made the choice plain when they began to move, seemingly without conscious command.
Flight it is, Ayo thought -- and ran.
The woods behind the complex were thin, but dark enough to guide Ayo a few kilometers without suspicion to a broken row of homes. The scent of grilling meat wafted along with soothing, static jams of a radio. Ayo hesitated, there was distance to be made but to where? The white mastiff came from nowhere.
The mastiff leaps at Ayo with intent to kill, Ayo dodges the dog and continues running through the backyards of the houses. He stops to grab a hot dog off an open grill and hops over a fence. Finally back on the street, Ayo comes face to face with the man! Stop right there Ayo!
Ayo took a breath. Muscular, hoodie, collared shirt, clean shaven so, professional. Bulge under left arm, right handed. He grabbed, twisted the man's arm, shifted left, elbow to head, foot to knee, snap. Ayo exhaled.
He swayed, like a drunk searching faces for familiarity. Who? How? The way you already know across the street there's a running car, an open cafe, possible back door.
There was way out, a place, somewhere, a place where people are shadows, like in that cafe, no wait, they've got faces, and voices, but look there, that taxi, see that man, Ayo is drawn in, the taxi looked abandon, but there was a driver there staring back at him, waiting, for Ayo to enter.
